Summary: An excellent and probbing set of wargame rules!
Comment: Mr. Bowden produced a set of wargames rules designed to lead the historically interested through the trials, tribulations, and (hopefully) triumphs of the greater and lesser captains of a spectacular age of war. While relatively complex, it does indeed guide one through a rewarding simulation and exploration of field command and grand-tactical combat in the Age of Napoleon. As a play is meant to be seen and heard as a piece of theatre, so this work is rather a guide to a simulation and game rather than simply a text to be read ... but for those deeply interested in the period, it may nevertheless provide thoughtful material even for those not prepared to actually deploy a miniature field army on a table-top. It is insightful, although prone to be repetitious, as can be the nature of a set of rules. A thoroughly absorbing experience for those so inclined. I am still poking about in my pack for the fabled marshal's baton said to lurk there...
