Summary: Memorable quotes from famous IC execs
Comment: In his 1844 novel Coningsby, British statesman and author Benjamin Disraeli said: "Youth is a blunder; Manhood a struggle; Old Age a regret."
One wonders if executives in the semiconductor industry will have any regrets if or when they read Craig Addison's new book entitled: Best of Times, Worst of Times: Quotations from the Best and Brightest Minds in the Semiconductor Industry (The Lighthouse Group Ltd., Hong Kong).
In the pocket-sized book, Addison edits and compiles more than 200 insightful, humorous, and sometimes outlandish quotations from notable semiconductor executives on a range of topics, such as Moore's Law, Intel, China, Japan, DRAMs, industry cycles, and wafer foundries.
Among the executives quoted are Craig Barrett, Morris Chang, Wilfred Corrigan, Doug Dunn, Andrew Grove, John Kelly, Brian Halla, James Morgan, Gordon Moore, T.J. Rodgers, Jerry Sanders III, Ulrich Schumacher, and many others.
The media sources from which the quotations were sourced include the Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones, Newsweek, EE Times, and Semiconductor Business News, now called Silicon Strategies. EE Times and Silicon Strategies are both published by CMP Media of New York.
In the book, Addison presents some of the more memorable old standbys, including the famous saying from Sanders: "Real men have fabs." The chairman of Advanced Micro Devices Inc., of course, was referring to the now ill-conceived notion that real semiconductor companies have fabs.
The book also lists other humorous, but lesser known statements. During a SEMI dinner in 1999, for example, Corrigan, chairman and CEO of LSI Logic Corp., said: "Fifteen years ago, we were all anticipating tomorrow's hangover. Today, we are in the midst of what should be a lengthy upturn. It's time for us all to enjoy the party."
Here are among some personal favorites: In 1999, Edward C. White Jr., an analyst with Lehman Brothers, said, "We think that the semiconductor equipment industry has a number of years left in the upturn." Meanwhile, in the same year, Craig Barrett, CEO of Intel Corp., declared: "The road to the Internet is paved with silicon."
Obviously, Addison pokes some much-needed fun at the industry. But his book is also balanced with a series of pithy truisms and insights from the top IC and chip-equipment executives. For example, in 2001, Barrett said: "You never save your way through a downturn. You innovate your way through it."
Additionally, in an interview with a wire service in 2003, Chang, chairman of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC), said: "We're not going to spend any money unless we're very confident it's going to be utilized 100 percent from the beginning."
Call them truisms or trite one-liners. Humorous or not, the compilation of quotations from Addison sheds some invaluable lessons and light for an industry that is grasping for answers. As simple as they seem, these pithy "one-liners" are timeless insights from the best and brightest minds in our industry.
