Summary: Indexing: The Manual of Good Practice
Comment: This book covers a lot of ground, and Pat Booth's eloquent writing style makes it easy to spend countless hours with it. Whether you read the book sequentially (cover-to-cover) or open it to random pages, Booth never fails to make it worth your while. Even so, I highly recommend reading Chapter One, which dispels myths about indexes and indexing, first.
Indexing: The Manual of Good Practice is extremely well organized. Its twelve chapters include:
1.Indexes - Purpose and Uses; 2.Indexers; 3.What (and Whether) to Index; 4.Forming the Index Entries; 5.Editing and Presenting the Index; 6.Serial Publications; 7.Images and Sound (Audio) Recordings; 8.Subject Specialisms; 9.Literature for Children; 10.Managing the Work; 11.Technology; 12.Professional Organizations and Interest Groups
Overall, I agree with Mary Piggott (President of the Society of Indexers, 1995-1997), who wrote the Foreword for this book. She said, "Indexing: The Manual of Good Practice is at once a revelation for the potential or beginner indexer and a source of reference and revision - also of enlightenment - for the experienced practitioner."
Happy indexing! .... Lori
