Summary: a true tour de force of light-washed brilliantisme
Comment: ...a true tour-de-force...a textbook...no...a manifesto...no...the manifesto of French Surrealism...If you read only one book in the coming milennium...make damned sure it's Les Chants de Maldoror!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: 5
Summary: This is book is intensely surreal, not for the sqeamish.
Comment: The story itself is hard at times to follow, all things aside, Maldoror is a book of such extreme power and talent(and on occasion and arrogance regarding his own talent) that it is diffucult to put down. The main character, who can be seen as the author himself, undergoes a violent struggle with god in a series of drifting and unrelated chapters(in true surrealistic style) and moments of true poetic beauty. The book from which the phrase: "As beautiful as a chance encounter of a sewing machine and an umbrella on an operating table" (a major surrelist statement used by Breton) was produced. Brilliant.
