Summary: "People" makes its case for the 100 greatest TV stars
Comment: It should go without saying that of course "People" is wrong when it presents the "100 Greatest TV Stars of Our Time," but that is always half the fun with a book like this. After all, only two of the cast of "Friends" made, but both the Olsen twins (they count as one of the 100). "Our Time" means starting from 1974, the year "People" was first published, when "All in the Family" was the number one show on television and "Here's Lucy" was in its final season (No, Lucille Ball is not on the list).
The interesting part of this volume is the way "People" puts the 100 stars into nine categories, beginning with the Icons. Now, this is the no-brainer category in that everybody covered is indeed an icon, from Jennifer Aniston ("The People's Crush") and Bill Cosby ("The Father Figure") to Johnny Carson ("The Natural") and Jerry Seinfeld ("Master of His Domain"). After that it is a question of who else you think belongs in there as well. My vote is for Alan Alda, "Mr. Sensitive," who is listed under the Making Their Mark category along with Henry Winkler and Calista Flockhart.
Other categories include Sitcom Sensations such as Ted Danson and John Ritter, They Started in Stand-Up with Robins Williams and Bob Newhart, Starring as Themselves with David Letterman and Katie Couric, Sexy, Sexy, Sexy with George Clooney and Heather Locklear, Tough Customers from Susan Lucci to James Gandolfini, Crowd Pleasers like Jimmy Smits and Martin Sheen, and Teen Dreams from Sarah Michelle Gellar to John Travolta. Another couple dozen names get dropped in two other sections, one of which reminds us of Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks Before They Were Movie Stars and Significant Others like Jaleel White and Michael Richards.
As I said, arguing about these choices is half the fun, even if are just sitting there having a discussion with the book in your hands. Is putting Ozzy Osborune and Debra Messing on the list premature or is a couple of years of celebrity enough? Why only one cartoon character? My recurring thought was how often the mention of one star engendered fond thoughts of the entire cast: Who can think of John Belushi or Gilda Radner without thinking about all of the other Not Ready for Prime Time Players from "SNL"? The same holds true for Alda and "M*A*S*H," O'Connor and "All in the Family," and Seinfeld and "Seinfeld." But then these lists are never meant to be definitive and at least "People" did not go off the deep end with any of their selections.
At least they did not actually rank these stars 1-100, because then I might have to write an angry letter.
