Summary: Disappointing
Comment: I really wanted to love this set of tutorials...
Things start off OK, with a clear run-through of basic computing skills and the basics of getting aroud the new Painter 8's interface, choosing brushes, selecting papers, adding layers, working with later masks, etc.
The problem is that this information is not really unique to Painter and in fact looks more and more like PhotoShop. What I really wanted was some step-by-step instruction on how to use the natural media tools in Painter with techniques that were beyond what I can come to via experimentation alone.
What I got was a chance to watch the instructors, Lynda Weinman mostly, stumble through the brushes with not much more proficeincy than what I've been able to get by playing with the program for five or six hours. Her drawing skills are not inspiring, and her teaching skills are rambling and grating.
Especially annoying was the total lack of editing. Every false start and head-scratching moment was preserved in the final movies. Also annoying was the practice of starting from scratch with every movie, repeating over and over again how to add a layer, how to open the papers pallet, how to select brushes, how to change the brush size, etc., etc. Add it all up and there is at least an hour wasted on this kind of tedious repetition.
In movie after movie I watched as the narrator used a different class of brushes seemingly for the first or second time in their life, stating the obvious about each, offering nothing that can't be found in the manual. Lynda Weinman obviously understood the water color brushes best of all, but gave no clue as to what the difference was between the "true" water color brushes and the digital watercolor brushes and when you would want to use which.
And that sums up the main weakness of the lessons - unispired walk-throughs of applying brush strokes to insipid illustration ideas with no clues as to how to use them creatively to solve real world design and creative problems.
Given the line-up for this release, I had high hopes. I'm left feeling duped.
