Summary: A Great Book for a Beginning Digital Photographer
Comment: I purchased the 3040 zoom camera last Christmas. I've been happily snapping pictures in fully automatic mode for a year now (mostly because I was intimidated by all the manual settings).
Until now, I've never had an education in the concepts of photography and the mechanics of picture taking. This book provided a great foundation in photography for me.
Curtin not only talks about the buttons and menu settings of the camera, but also provides background into concepts such as what is the aperture, what is the depth of field, etc. and how these concepts relate to picture taking and the camera setup.
After finishing the book, I am far from a professional photographer, but I now have an appreciation for the manual settings I can configure while taking pictures and the overrides I can apply to impart corrections and creativity to the images. Based on this book, I would recommend his other books to users of other digital cameras as well.

Summary: The best accessory you can get for your camera
Comment: Curtain's book is the perfect aftermarket manual. In addition to 25+ years of 35mm experience and lots of comfort with computers and various gizmos, I had 9 months to get used to my new Olympus Camedia, and lots of RTFM. Still, an hour with Curtain's book gave me much better fluency with the camera and better access to the camera's features. Digital photography is quite different -- it takes a while to get the same feel of hands-on control as a 35mm camera, and get beyond the unsatisfying "full-auto" snapshooting. The book has helped me greatly with this.
There isn't actually much new information in the manual beyond basic knowledge of photography + the manufacturer's manual. The contribution the author makes is in the way he communicates it. I suspect he is a very experienced teacher.
The book is well organized and would be useful for people at any level of experience. Basic concepts such as focus, exposure, depth of field, shutter speed, and how to use them are explained clearly, concisely, and without condescension.
The book itself is an inexpensively produced B&W spiral bound format that's not much to look at. The CD-ROM extras are well worth it. The author is generous with his content. The CD-ROM has the book in a full-color Adobe Acrobat format PLUS a wonderfully concise Pocket Guide. These are both cleverly given in two versions -- one is paginated for 2-sided printing. The author and publishers have thought through how the user really needs to use this. The extra software seems to be only WIN format so I can't comment on it, but I got what I bought the book for.
I lent the book to my mom, who is a much more systematic and careful photographer than I am, with some formal training. She has warned me that I shouldn't expect to get it back. You can use the book just as it says -- as a short course. Work through it carefully from the front to the back and you will have a mastery of your camera.
There are so many bad manuals in this world that it is a joy to find such a well-thought-through guide. I assume that Curtain's guides for other cameras are just as good. I recommend this manual (or the edition for other cameras) without reservation to anyone who uses a digital camera.
If you are looking for a gift for someone with a digital camera, this is much better than any gizmo -- and I love gizmos!
