Summary: Good book, unusual and clarifying
Comment: A brilliant (and valiant) exposition of an Indian tradition: the Siddhantham of the 18 Siddhas of the South of India. One reason for the western ignorance about this Tradition is because the Siddhas wrote in tamil, not in sanskrit. So, there are no translations of the writings and the knowledge of the Siddhas. The book is an erudite work of Marshall Govindan that transmits the love that the author has for this Tradition. He received these teachings from his master, Yogi Ramaiah. This books opens new looks and points of view about Kriya Yoga to the western mind, for those who are ready to understand a bigger picture of the Yoga lore, a picture that includes the past (with the knowledge of the origins of the Yoga tradition) and also the future.
The system of Kriya techniques of this lineage is different of the lineage of Lahiri Mahasaya. I have seen strong changes for better in the lives of people who practice it; it is designed to improve your life in all levels; the Siddha tradition doesn't run away from the world, but uses the gifts of Yoga to improve the society and the world (the Siddhas wrote a lot of works about different matters, including medicine and philosophy). These techniques are wonderful treasures, but only for those who are ready to practice them, they are not for faith fundamentalists looking for controversies, those who always think that there is only one way - their way. Saint Thomas Aquinus defined well the fundamentalist when he said, "I am afraid of the man of only one book!"
Yoga is an experience, not a faith. The Siddhas themselves were very critics against faiths; they offered the Kriya techniques as a pathway to direct experience. Their message and scientific approach to spirituality are completely alive today!

Summary: Read This Book - Truly a Rare Gem!
Comment: A brilliant and captivating insight into the lives of the great masters of ancient India. Not only did these great masters such as Babaji, Siddha Agastyar, and Swami Ramalinga attain various siddhas and enlightenment through Kriya yoga, they were able to transform their physical bodies into pure light bodies. If you would like to study further into the teachings of these great masters, get The One Minute Guide to Prosperity and Enlightenment by Sri Siva. The author, Sri Siva, is a reincarnation of both Siddha Agastyar and Swami Ramalinga, and he teaches manifestation and spiritual techniques through the use of mantras.

Summary: A Waste of Your Time and Money
Comment: I cannot even call Marshall Govindan the "author" of this book. It is all common knowledge New Age junk pasted together with a little commentary or sometimes none at all. SAA Ramaiah, Mr. Govindan's primary source of information, is a perennial laughingstock in authentic Kriya Yoga circles. This is largely due to the man's own folly. For example, placing a drawing of Babaji on his website with his own picture superimposed on it, then claiming that it was an actual photo of himself and Babaji. Another is a supposed "signature" of Babaji. The man is a con artist, and his disciple is ... well, he is the author of this book.

The book is about Siddhanta and not about Babaji. It is about the myth of the 18 Tamil Siddhas and Boganathar and Agastyar. People that you are not interested to know. There is also a chapter about Swami Ramalinga. There is nothing in this book that you can't find in the Internet. It is the same old story. The artwork is terrible. It was done by a relative of the author. If you are thinking of buying the book for the artwork, you will be heavily dissapointed.

As you may already know by now, the "Kriya yoga" being taught by Marshall Govindan and the Kriya Yoga mentioned by Paramhansa Yogananda in Autobiography of a Yogi are completely different, without even the slightest trace of similarity. Maybe you have read the Autobiography and want to find more information about Babaji. Govindan's Babaji is not the Babaji that you're curious about. Instead of buying junks, save your money for real treasures like God Talks with Arjuna, Yoganandaji's spiritual commentary on the Gita available from Amazon.com.
