Summary: What the World Needs Now
Comment: In a world where violence seems to be the norm, this resource is a must for anyone wanting to teach peaceful living to children in our society. Activities presented in this practical how-to book are programmed to teach lessons with the following themes: Respecting Dignity, Learning Compassion, Developing a Positive Self-Image, Effective Communication, Anger Management and Conflict Resolution.
For over a decade, the authors have piloted programs with groups of middle-school children at day camps, overnight camps, day-long retreats and summer Bible programs using traditional games and crafts as well as origianl activities designed specifically with peacemaking in mind. While the games are interesting, it's the way they are processed afterward which give them their particular flavor. While the authors often use Roman Catholic terminology, it is easy to revise the processing to fit a more diverse or secular group.
I agree with Bishop Thomas Gumbleton who is quoted on the back cover: "PEACEMAKERS: THE NEW GENERATION could not be timelier. In a culture that breeds violence, in a time when children are accustomed to feeling insecure and threatened, this book teaches our youth that love, justice and peace are attainable realities."
