Title: Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual by Mark Dvoretsky, Artur Yusupov, Jacob Aagaard ISBN: 1-888690-19-4 Publisher: SCB Distributors Pub. Date: October, 2003 Format: Paperback Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $29.95 |
Average Customer Rating: 5 (3 reviews)
Rating: 5
Summary: Greatest Endgame Book Ever... Period
Comment: Dvoretsky's book provides the explanatory text needed to truly understand the endgame. He shows you the "essential" endgames necessary to master this phase of the game.
Every serious chessplayer should have this in their chess library.
If I were stuck on an island and could have on three chessbooks, this would be one of them(the others two: Life & Games of Mikhail Tal, Zurich International Chess Tournament 1953)!
Rating: 5
Summary: Kasparov's thoughts
Comment: I saw a transcript of some fan questions Garry Kasparov answered several months back, and this is a quote from it:
"I read chess literature. But most modern books are short-lived. That's the difference between them and Bronstein's Zurich 1953! One book maybe not yet in English is Dvoretsky's endgame book. I was impressed with the material. That's not a short-lived book."
That should speak for itself. I would say the main difference between this book and Fundamental Chess Endings by Muller and Lamprecht (and I would recommend both) is that FCE covers slightly more (diverse) material, but DEM gives more explanation for understanding. DEM will perhaps increase your understanding of the endgame more, but an endgame encyclopedia (of which FCE is the best) is also important to give you a greater variety of endings to practice.
Definitely one of the best works on the endgame ever.
Rating: 5
Summary: simply one of the best
Comment: you try to find good book on endgame, buy this one
everything in is clear
the blue texts and diagrams are to now by heart, (but the rest to)
the muller and lamprecht is good, but this one is much more
this volume is near complete, for much more insight about special topics go for nunn: rook endings, kortchnoi's book rook ending, muller pawns endings.
