Summary: Dollars over lives at sea
Comment: If I remember correctly, I originally bought the book due to the back blurb, "Even today ... at least one of these ships is lost every month." I wanted to find out what could possibly be happening. This book has four interconnected sections: descriptions of events leading up to the loss of ships, a summary of events after the loss of a ship, a description of the general pattern of cargo ship ownership over the Twentieth Century, and the long-running attempt by the families of the crew of the Derbyshire to force the British Government to investigate the loss. The stories of the events leading to the loss of ships are semi-fictionalised; the author combines information of what is known to have happened on the ships with his own clearly extensive knowledge of running a cargo ship. These accounts were very clear and interesting for someone with negligible knowledge of ship life. In fact, all of the writing is clear and accurate and very interesting. Also disturbing, as the book demonstrates the rate of loss of cargo ships, sometimes with all hands, and how modern international shipping system is responsible for this due to cost-cutting measures.
