Summary: The Gift
Comment: This is a very original crop circle book! Written in a time that the crop pictograms mainly consisted of circles, rings and bars, Ruby interpreted the symbols as templates for threedimensional models, which he constructed from plywood and which are extensively shown in this book. Instinctively, I feel like the author made a good guess, and may very well have discovered something 'real'. Unfortunately, some of his interpretations of the models he created are highly speculative, too fantastic, and way over the edge of our concept of natural laws (for example, the way he describes a sort of anti-gravity engine, the design of which is allegedly hidden in a number of pictograms). It is all right to jump over the edge of traditional science, but you should do it with care and with good reason. The author's explanations simply don't make sense at all at some places.
What I liked about this book is the author's dedication and enthusiasm, which is clearly felt on every single page (perhaps this is also the reason that the book is very well and nicely made). All in all I recommend this book to anyone interested in the crop circle phenomenon - perhaps not as the first book to read, but definitely not to miss. Summary: Intriguing and original.
Comment: The Gift is a thought-provoking examination of the phenomenon of "crop circles" (glyphs or pictograms). By employing a novel and creative approach to understanding these images (derived from "common sense and intuition"), Ruby extrapolates from the two-dimensional glyphs three-dimensional models, with eye-popping results. Ruby concludes from his research that the pictograms originate from extraterrestrial entities. He believes the sequence of the appearance of these images are building blocks to man's understanding of messages. These messages have begun with a description of UFO's physical structure and propulsion systems. These glyphs provide ever-more information as they progress in complexity.
Whether Ruby's "decoding" is correct or not, it is facile to dismiss the reality of a true mystery. It is certainly correct that many of these "circles" are hoaxes. There was even a "crop circle making" competition in England. However, research by scientists like Charles Levengood and Nancy Talbott have shown empirically that "real" crop circles show changes at the cellular level (which can be replicated by short, intense bursts of microwave energy). There is also no breakage of the stalks of the plants, only bending. This cannot be done by hoaxers. Aside from that, the notion that two English geezers and copycats are creating thousands of such glyphs worldwide, showing complex fractal geometry patterns, and leaving no trace of their presence, is ridiculous. The recent (Aug.01) Chilbolton, England glyphs will sorely test the hoax hypothesis. Carl Sagan offered his biased, mechanistic view, conveniently ignoring that which did not fit; Jim Schnabel ('Dark White')seems to be more of a debunker than an open-minded skeptic. Both provide a convenient out for those who prefer their ordered and safe world view. If you aren't afraid to consider other possibilities, however, this work will deliver.

Summary: Alternative Viewpoints
Comment: I heartily recommend this interesting book, which presents a refreshingly different perspective. As for the reviewer promoting Jim Schnabel's 'Round in Circles' as a solution to the mystery, it would be foolish indeed to jump to the conclusion that a known CIA agent is going to present the public with unadorned facts, given that government disinformation on this subject, media manipulation, and the 'Firm's role in it, is already well documented.
