Summary: masterful plotting: surprises in both events and meanings
Comment: Wanted to post a review to balance that of another reader. Would agree with Kirkus Review that this is "a gem." The plotting is masterful, with several interesting twists, leading to thoughtful reflections by character and reader over how little we may recognize what is most important in our lives.

Summary: Nothing to write home about
Comment: If Eduardo Mendoza is considered one of Spain's greatest writers, it is not because of this book. There is nothing here that you haven't read a thousand times before. You could read this book in the dentist's waiting room. It wil take you all of about 10 minutes (max) to figure out what will happen. Anyone looking for good 20th century Spanish fiction should read Javier Marias. End of story.
