He came from eastern Africa as a slaves yet his monumental has made a lasting impact upon the face of islamic scholarship. Al jahiz is one of the earlier authors of his day to write in scientific notation and wote many books on anthropological and zoological subjects. The book is a bit expensive,but well worth your money.
