Summary: a valuable resource
Comment: This book is a valuable resource on secessionist movements, particularly in the developing world. You can find information on everything from the Karens in Burma to the Bougainville conflict in the Solomon Islands, areas that are sadly understudied. It also includes some chapters on advanced democracies, though other volumes are perhaps superior here. Like most edited volumes, it is very short on theory: there is little attempt to develop a comprehensive explanation for secessionism around the world. The introduction's treatment of existing theories of secessionism is hit-and-miss. Still, a fascinating book if you find the topic as interesting as I do.
