Summary: Flaws vastly outweighted by strengths
Comment: Yes, this author parades his knowledge and opinions in a conceited fashion. Yes, he seems to want to draw unnecessary attention to himself. These are quirks I don't like. But I disagree with other review writers that they weaken the book a lot. I still think that this is a superior product to other one-volume overrviews ogf the Nazi road to power. Is the research not fantastic? Is the coverage not inclusive and sweeping? I rate the book highly because I can seperate a book from its author. Add this book to your library. Study it.

Summary: Sensible, average, but not innovative.
Comment: I'm pleased I bought this book. It provides a sensible and fairly exhaustive overview of the rise of the Nazis. But I'm also disappointed. The book contains nothing unique or original. In terms of fact and interpretation it is safe and conforming, and devoid of originality.
Perhaps my standards are unrealistic, or maybe my expectation of a book by Professor Evans, a distinguished academic at Cambridge University, was too high. Either way I don't rate this book as a lofty contribution. It lacks the penetrating analytical touch of Michael Burleigh's similar but better work, and as the first work of a trilogy does not inspire me to think about buying the next two volumes.

Comment: I am no scholar, but this book was easily read and provided facts I must have missed in my school days. I would recommend to the average reader and history buff...
