Summary: A new style for a master thriller writer
Comment: There is a certain simplicity in KILLING FLOOR, the first novel by Lee Child featuring his hero Jack Reacher. The character hits us with no past and no real thought for the future. He reacts to what is wrong and tries to right it. There is a pervasive sense of morality with violence as the ultimate result of these wrongs. It is a thriller in its most pure and unblemished form. It can be read superficially with little lost by the reader. In the subsequent six books, we learn more and more about Reacher. Now with the latest, THE ENEMY, we travel back in time to 1990 antedating the first novel by several years- a prequel. It is easily the most complex and accomplished novels of the series to date.
New Year's Eve, 1990 finds Reacher, an MP of the US army, investigating the death of a general found in a sleazy hotel room in a remote rural region. It appears that he died of a heart attack. When Reacher travels to the General's house to tell his wife, he finds her also dead but murdered. As Reacher investigates, Special Forces members begin to die also by murder. Reacher must solve the crimes as he is being set up by somebody unknown to take the fall.
THE ENEMY is a highly complex murder mystery. In this sense it is very different than the other Reacher books. The others are more of the thriller subgenre whereas this one is more of a police procedural. Given that this is a new style and format for Lee Child, there are some inherent problems- the mystery is a bit too complex requiring several long expositions at the end to wrap it all up. The expositions could be a bit difficult to fully comprehend. However, the characters are well sketched and there is a certain sense of realism- more so than in previous books. Perhaps this is a testament to the increasing skill of the already highly regarded author. We can expect more from Lee Child with each successive book.

Summary: A master work from a master craftsman
Comment: Lee Child writes books the way Miles Davis played music. Every composition contains recognizable elements, and yet every composition is completely different.
In a Lee Child composition, some of the recognizable elements are: clean, elegant prose; a tight plot; abundant twists and turns; and more than one heart stopping surprise. An added element in "The Enemy" is that this book not only stops the heart, but tugs at the heartstrings.
The eighth Jack Reacher novel, "The Enemy" takes place in 1990, as the Berlin Wall is coming down and the world is drastically changing. In the Army, Jack Reacher's life-long home, change is not good. It's an enemy to be defeated by any means necessary. Reacher is a man who has dedicated his life to doing the right thing, to protecting the Army. Now he's faced with an awful task: he must protect the Army from itself.
In seven previous Jack Reacher novels, we've come to know him as a loner, a man who cannot and will not end his chosen life of wandering isolation. In "The Enemy" we meet a younger Reacher, not yet hardened by the choices this case will force upon him. This Reacher is just a bit warmer, just a bit more accessible, with an easier sense of humor.
When he's inexplicably transferred from Panama to Fort Bird, North Carolina, Reacher doesn't think much of it - hey, it's the Army - but he soon discovers that this is no ordinary assignment. A heart attack victim at the local no-tell motel is a two-star general. The general's wife is found murdered. Reacher's commanding officer is replaced, suspiciously, by a vicious idiot who wants nothing more than to make Reacher the fall guy for the entire mess. And in Paris, Reacher's mother is very, very ill.
Partnering with a young, female lieutenant, Reacher sets out to solve the mystery in spite of the roadblocks in his path. And, typically, he refuses to let anything or anyone stop him. Just as typically, Reacher is determined to do the right thing, no matter what the personal cost may be. In this case, the personal cost will be high - maybe more than Reacher can afford.
The question at the heart of the book is, who or what really is the enemy that Reacher has to fight? And does he have any hope at all of winning the battle? Lee Child has written another gripping novel, one with heart and soul, suspense and passion - a masterwork from a master craftsman.

Summary: Exciting, Suspensful, Fast Paced, Well Written
Comment: I have loved all of Lee Child's books, with Reacher as the amazing, competent, flawed hero. The Persuader was a dissapointment, so it was wonderful to read The Enemy and have the quality of previous books revisited. It is curious how Lee Child, from book to book, will write in the first person or the third person and yet somehow it still works. I have recommended these books to others and will continue to. I am looking forward to the next Jack Reacher story that Lee Child is working on.
