Rating: 3
Summary: Absolutely hysterical, yet lacking
Comment: I really love Dave Barry's humor, and was somewhat disappointed to realize that he's not quite ready for the fictional novel genre. Though _Big Trouble_ is laugh-out-loud-tears-streamingly funny in many places, the plot is relatively weak and bumpy.
Still, readers who enjoy Barry's style will likely enjoy this book, which is a quick and light read, and may even roll themselves out of bed from laughing so hard. There were times, when I tried to read a passage aloud to my boyfriend, when I was totally unable to speak from laughter, and had to hand it over to him to read for himself. There are some seriously inspired moments of comedy here that wouldn't fit into his usual essay format, simply because he wouldn't have the character development to capitalize on the humor.
I really hope to see more novels from Barry, perhaps after he polishes his technique just a bit. Reading a future book that was this funny, but smoother in technique, would truly be a pleasure.

Summary: Read this before moving to Miami
Comment: I loved the book - it is set in the humorous, but all too real world of Miami where anything can happen. From the high school kids to the FBI agents it, the characters have their own unique charm (personal favorite - Roger). The plot is just about what you could expect from the author - who has spent too many years down here in the humidity writing about what makes South Florida unique. Read this book ! Don't move down here, remember this could also be non-fiction any day now. Visit, spend tourist dollars, go home !
Seriously, this is well worth the reading time. Fast-paced, good characterizations, and funny. I hope Dave Barry continues to write columns and even more novels (how about a So.Fla. sport team in the playoffs ?)

Summary: Dirty
Comment: This might have been a fun book if it had been more decent, but it just went too far. It deserves an R rating, and I find nothing at all amusing about that. I threw it in the trash before I was half done. And I won't pick up any more of Barry's fiction unless I have reason to believe it's no worse than a PG-13.
