Summary: A poor but only choice
Comment: The lack of alternatives for MTEL prepartaion guides is the only good reason to buy this book which contains a surprising number of errors.
The study guide portion of the book labors under the need to condense the world of literature into fewer than 100 pages. The result are errors of fact (Paradise Lost is "about man's journey to the Celestial City" p. 74), or very hasty syntax ("Teens value...William Shakespeare...because [he] is fun to read... whatever the underlying worth" p. 85). Such howlers raise questions about the credibility of the guide through out.
The book contains only one sample test which limits a student's ability to improve with practice. And again there are obvious errors. Question 71 incorrectly defines apostrophe as personification and later compounds the confusion at question 88 when it correctly identifies a quote as an example of apostrophe. Question 40 refers to "the first American literature." Native American? Puritan? Southern Cavallier? Exploration journals? Whatever one assumes the "first American literature" actually refers to is not characterized, as the answer states, as "maudlin and self-pitying."
The above examples are only taken from areas that I know quite well. But they raise serious questions about this guide's knowledge and care throughout.
