Summary: Ariel Gore expertly weaves stories...
Comment: ...from her past with tales from other mamas in hew newest winner, The Mother Trip. Their combined words remind us that we are not alone and that most inportantly, we need to be honest with ourselves about who we are and what we need to feel personally fulfilled. She addresses the combined feelings of joy and isolation that motherhood beings upon us. It isn't easy to be a mom, and while our generation has received so many mixed messages about what a good mother is, she reminds us that the world in which we live has no room for the strict patriarchal parenting styles of our grandmothers' time.
While I honestly believe and support Ariel's message, I can't help but feel guilty for not practicing what I preach. I feel as though some of my words quoted in the book were used against me, but for that reminder I am surprisingly thankful.

Summary: The Mothertrip by Ariel Gore
Comment: This book came to me during a hellish week of terrible two tantrums and extreme sleep deprivation. I cried while reading these poetic, honest, inspiring and validating essays. Ariel Gore knows what's up. I also laughed, nodded, giggled and dared to dream ahead --to envision my future --because Gore's writing and voice is that powerful. Gore is an amazing author, woman and mama. Her belief in sharing knowledge and experience to wipe out the isolation, desperation and depression of mamahood is not only right on but the very thing to which she seems to be dedicating her life's work. If it wasn't for The Hipmama Survival Guide, the printed zine, The Mothertrip and the webcommunity (hipmama.com)...I would have perished a long time ago. I fully, and with all my heart and soul, recommend this book.

Summary: Don't forget your own needs
Comment: I agree with Ariel, mother's should keep a sense of humor and remember not to neglect their own needs. A happy mother is better for any child. I think of the instructions for an emergency on an airplane, a parent needs to take care of herself first and then take care of the child. That is what's best for the child.
