Summary: Wonderful selection of gentle songs
Comment: I working with a children's choir in our church. I am looking for songs that the children will find uplifting and at the same time beatiful songs to hear. Some of the standard 'children's songs' in other collections are so musically simple that they are boring, even to the children. This collection of songs fits the bill for me. There are a few old standards, but many are new songs to me. The newer songs are beautiful selections. The songs are lovely to listen to, most are short enough for a young child to sing. The messages are beautiful, offering songs of peace, prayers, and christian stories. Not all the songs have Christian wording. Although the book is mostly Christian songs, many of the songs are not necessarily Christian. My children sing some of these songs in public school, where songs must have no religious content. Some of these songs are about peace or love. While I have several other songbooks to work with, I find that I will be able to select almost all the songs that I want to do this year from this book alone

Summary: Chattering and Singing
Comment: Chatter with the Angels: An Illustrated Songbook for Children is an excellent book for introducing children to Christian hymnody and for instilling in children a love of music. This beautiful hardback songbook contains old favorites, familiar children's choruses, and some new songs. Any young child is certain to be attracted to the colorful illustrations in this book. Colorful drawings and charming illustrations are alive throughout the book. The artwork was done mostly with Prismacolor pencils and a touch of acrylic paint. The book is divided into ten sections, each of which begins with a two-page color splash and illustrations of children. The sections are held together with a colorful border along the right and left of each two-page spread. Each section has a unique border, which the illustrator has tied together with the colors and artwork in that section. The musical score, the notes, and the words are in black, but the song titles are colored and about half the spreads have illustrations of children or animals. Simple keyboard accompaniments and guitar chords are provided for all songs. The tunes are from a wide variety of time periods, styles, and cultures. The texts depict God as gentle and loving. The language is simple, direct, and inclusive. Chattering with the Angels is a high quality book. It has a glossy hard cover and the pages are of heavyweight, durable paper, so that the book can be used for years without deteriorating significantly. The pages will tolerate little fingers turning them over and over again. In my family children have traipsed all over the house and yard with favorite books. A beloved book might end up with a child in the treehouse or beside the pillow of a sleeping child. Favorites have gone to church and always go along on trips. We usually keep a few special books in the car for those times of unexpected waiting. The heavy-duty cover and pages of Chattering with the Angels will hold up under these kinds of conditions. In addition, the images in this book will surely stimulate any child's imagination. The color is a wonderful feature and the children and animals have endearing and enchanting characteristics. The children appear happy and peaceful, and the animals appear soft, loving, and gentle. While hearing and singing the songs, children (and adults alike) will want to step into the illustrated setting and also climb the tree by the gentle river, pick wild flowers in the lush meadow, and fly a kite in the fresh breeze. They will want to catch the brilliant blue and purple butterfly, pet the soft kitten, lamb, and bunnies, and ring the bells, play the tambourine, play the violin, or strum the guitar along with the children in the book. As children are drawn into songs visually as well as aurally, they will respond with singing or chattering and with movement so that the song will become etched into their beings. Furthermore, I find Chattering with the Angels appealing because the selection of hymns and choruses is very appropriate for children of all ages. When I began singing songs to my children twenty-seven years ago, I realized that some songs from my childhood were inappropriate for the theology and the philosophy of nurturing children that I was embracing. So I become very selective in the songs I sang to my children. I did not sing songs about the devil or hell or songs with strong war images. Chattering with the Angels includes hymns that can be sung for a lifetime. Examples are "For the Beauty of the Earth," "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore You," " Joy to the World," "The Lord's My Shepherd," "For God So Loved Us" (in both English and German), and "Dona Nobis Pacem." The texts are carefully chosen by the authors to "portray God as a gentle, loving God who cares for us and as a great and creative force in our world." If there is a drawback to Chattering with the Angels, it might be the cost, which is [price] in the U.S. (However, I think it is money well spent.) Also, the musical score does not include four parts for singing or piano accompaniment. Although the accompaniments for the songs in this book are delightful and light, I am accustomed to playing the four parts of hymns as they are written in our church hymnals. I prefer the full sound of four parts when I play songs on the piano. My first grandchild was born one year ago. Before Juna's first visit to my house at two weeks of age, I decided I wanted to read to her and sing to her during our first hour together alone. I took her to the piano and, while I cradled her precious little body in my left arm, I played with my right hand and sang. She slept the whole time! But on each of her subsequent visits during this past year, I have taken her to the piano for at least a few minutes. At a few months of age she began cooing and touching the keys while I played and sang. Before long she was chattering, reaching for songbooks, and trying to turn pages. So when I discovered Chattering with the Angels, I knew it was a necessary addition to my collection. When I wrote a check to purchase the book, before I put my pen away, I wrote inside the cover, "To Juna, to keep at Nana's house." Now when Juna comes to my house, she eagerly toddles toward the piano. At the piano we open our favorite songbook, and she sings and plays random notes while I sing and play around her little hands. It is a delightful activity, which assures me that some of Juna's earliest memories will include Chattering with the Angels!
