Summary: Funny, wise, and illuminating guide
Comment: Karla McLaren's humor and wisdom have been really transforming for me. This book, along with her brilliant Emotional Genius, clarified all kinds of concepts and experience that I had never really understood. The books are a great pair -- I realized after reading them that I hadn't really known what the chakras were, except in the vaguest way, or how they connected to each other, or to the emotions. The gift McLaren gives is that she teaches us how to find balance in a world full of imbalancing influences. Anyone can say, "Trust yourself," but what is that self, and exactly how do we learn to trust it? These books give both specific techniques and general information. They also give that information in a humorous, readable, down-to-earth style that I really appreciate. They're on my reference shelf! I highly recommend them to everyone who wants to get grounded and learn how to live with themselves and other people.

Summary: Ground-breaking and grounded
Comment: I was intrigued by McLaren's work after reading an on-line excerpt from this book called "channeling your emotions". The clarity and wisdom in that brief passage left me wanting more.
Your Aura and Your Chakras: The Owner's Manual delivers just that. It is amazing how much information is packed into the pages of this book. And in contrast to many other spiritual texts, McLaren advocates eliminating any intermediaries, including herself, between you and Spirit. As the sub-title suggests this is about the reader being a physical embodiment of Spirit and how to maintain a healthy energetic connection.
Based on her extensive (over thirty years) experience in energetic healing, McLaren leads you through many easy to follow meditative exercises. While I mastered many of these with ease, it was always comforting to know that Karla had included a comprehensive "trouble-shooting guide" in the back of the book for handy reference...
In short, the love and compassion that went into writing this book was evident in page after page. The fact that the author has transformed her own pain into a healing message for the world is truly inspiring.

Summary: Glad I bought it, but pissed off at the author
Comment: The first two visualization exercises are worth the purchase price of the book. I have stopped reading at Chapter Two, because Ms. McLaren has claimed - flippantly, no less - that she has the ability to heal schizophrenics. Dude - back it up with sound statistics, or leave it out. I'd believe she can heal hypochondria, but schizophrenia? To claim such a thing without backing it up is to give false hope to anyone who is or loves a schizophrenic, thereby doing them a huge disservice. It also does a huge disservice to Ms. McLaren because it makes her sound A) untrustworthy and B) unintelligent. This single statement turned me off to the entire book because it made me feel Ms. McLaren's own issues are getting in the way, even if her only issue is an aversion to running a proper research study (maybe I am overly nerdy but I don't think that's too hard to do). I am grateful for Ms. McLaren's wonderful visualization exercises, but I am only going to skim the rest of the book for these and ignore the parts where she talks about her own experiences.
