Summary: Excellent Historical Fiction
Comment: This book chronicles the lives of the Birmingham Family on the eve of the Civil War. The family is split with one brother and his family living in Boston and the other brother and his family living in South Carolina. The southern family has a son who is decidedly abolitionist and has been disowned by his parents.

This book is an easy read, but has many characters and subplots going at one time. The author includes actual historical figures in the book to help recreate the atmosphere in the United States during this difficult period. I recommend this book for anyone with an interest in American History with the caution to remember that this is still just fiction.

Comment: This book was very well researched and written. I started reading it three days ago and could not put it down. After finishing it in 3 days I find myself very eager for Volume 2.
I strongly recomend this book to anyone with any remote interest in the civil war.
