Summary: Helpful supplementary material
Comment: I just passed the VB6 desktop exam, and this book helped in the process. I did 3 things to prepare for the exam: 1) As a primary source, I read the VB6 desktop applications book by MS Press; 2) I used this book to supplement the first one; 3) I spent some time outside of work trying things in the VB IDE (such as seldom-used debugging tools) so I was ready to handle trick questions.

This book was a helpful supplement because its many sample test questions are fairly difficult, and the author points out many unusual or tricky aspects of VB that the main text ignores. Often these tricky details become the basis for test questions, and the author helps you anticipate these. Yes there are a few errors in the book, but not many, and the harder sample questions combined with detailed explanations will help you to face the real test. The MS Press book is good but very basic, and by itself does not give you enough to pass the test, unless you are already a very experienced MS developer.

Summary: Too much of things you don't need, and missing things u need
Comment: I took the VB Desktop (70-176) exam sometime ago and missed it by a hair. Using my experience and a different guide (New Riders MCSD VB 6, my review is on this site) I figured I'd research some extra material.

This book I discovered in my local city library by a fluke so I figured hey great I can use this and it will cost nothing. Now having read it here's what I can say.

The books organization seems fine, but it condenses too much information in a very unuseful manner. It reads like a very bad MSDN. Sections in the book talk about stuff that you will never even see on the exam. However I was glad to finally find out what the hell Zorder was for.

Secondly the book is missing things on the exam that you will need. There is absolutely no mention of Visual Source Safe and how to use it. You need to know VSS for the exam and this book doesn't even cover it. Also too many of the topics are lightly covered ecspecially the section on deployment which is a HUGE part of the exam.

Thirdly, there are practically no exercises for you to do which is bad, cause that's the only way you will really let a concept sink in and actually 'get it'.

What I did find good was the questions, which I can honestly say were TOUGH! The exam at the end was a good and extrememly hard and made me think (and it pissed me off).

I haven't taken the exam again yet, but I can say that the only thing I got out of the book were the sample questions. If I pass it again it won't be because of this book.

So overall I am EXTREMELY glad I did not have to buy this, and I can recommend solidly that you don't either.

Summary: Quite a few typos, conceptual errors, even in practical exam
Comment: I haven't taken the exam but I read the book in great details. There are more typos than I can accept. A lot of material is totally different from MSDN. (I think I can trust MSDN more). There are even errors in the Sample test. Some chapters are not explained well so I could not even tell it is right or wrong.

If you have plenty of time and know VB very well, you can sharpen your proof skill by reading this. The editor of this book in Coriolis should be blamed on his poor work. Mr. MacDonald, please proof read your work and try all your code before you put in text.
