Summary: A glimpse into the problems of an eating disorder
Comment: I finished this book yesterday, and before that I had read "Wasted", by Marya Hornbacher. They are two very different books, but both of them give you a glimpse into the world of the eating disordered mind. In "Wasted", Ms. Hornbacher seems to be much more troubled than Ms. Gottlieb does in "Stick Figure". It seemed to me that Lori Gottlieb really needed someone to talk to. Someone who she could relate to. One day she was ready to kill herself, and that same evening, one of the nurses at the hospital sat down and really talked to her, listened to her, and gave her some affection and caring. The next day, Lori ate half a sandwich, and apparantly was on the road to recovery soon after. Ms. Hornbacher's journey was much deeper, and it seems she still struggles with issues of self and food. The one thing that I got from both books, that I believe was what the authors were trying to convey, was that our whole society is messed up about food. When Lori was dieting, she kept talking about how no adult women she knew ate, so why did she have to? Being a woman in today's culture, I certainly identify with the comments that they both made about body image, diet, and our cultural obsession with thinness. Being the mother of a young daughter, I do not want to pass any of this on to my daughter. I think the only way to not do that is to get over these issues myself, and I think that seeing how the mothers in these books behaved, how they dieted all of the time and gave their daughters such bad messages, has shown me that the way to give my daughter a good role model is to practice what I preach and eat healthily. Also to cut myself a little slack if I don't look like a supermodel. This has been a rambling review, to be sure, but I would like to reccomend this book to any woman who wants to see how easy it can be for someone to flirt with a very dangerous eating disorder, and how easily such a flirtation can consume a person's life.

Summary: Touching Account of a Girl's Desent Into Anorexia
Comment: Though I am currently a recovering anorexic, I read this book before/as I was sinking into the depths of anorexia. Though I liked it a lot, I was drawn to it for all the wrong reasons: it taught me tricks about how to be a "good anorexic." This memoir is just one of many of its kind on the subject of eating disorders, though Lori Gottlieb details her journey in a more humorous way than do other authors, yet allows us readers to understand that she, like so many anorexics, is just looking to fit in and be loved and appreciated. I don't believe that anorexics, bulimics or people in danger of developing an eating disorder should read this book, or any other like it, though it would be good insight for people trying to understand more about these diseases, as it will tell you what they're really all about.

Summary: Almost a mockery.
Comment: I have read many books on eating disorders. While I somewhat appreciated the lighter side of this book, as eating disorders are very serious issues, it almost seemed as though she was mocking people with eating disorders. That's just how it came across to me, and I'm not sure why. The story didn't seem to have a real ending- she shows no signs of complete recovery or destined to a life in hospitals. I feel like it was written just as a "me too" type of story- everyone wants credit for their own little story to share.
