Summary: Once you start reading, it's hard to put down. Wow!
Comment: It is an excellent book for reading to understand the history of the families that lived
during the 1815's through 1830's regarding the beginning of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter Day Saints. It depicts a family who lives in the same area that Joseph Smith
lived in. It puts truths, facts, in with some fictional characters to bring up a story
that can be easily read. It helps the reader understand the plights of the people who
were involved in the establishment of the restoration of the church of Jesus Christ.
It is for anyone who wants to understand the history of the church, of Joseph Smith, of
families who were associated with him, their experiences, their highlights, and sufferings.
Once the book has been read, the reader will have experiences happiness, sadness,
surprise, understanding of the people facing moments of their time because of their
choice of religion.
This book is the first of 6 series written by Gerald Lund. Members of the LDS church
will enjoy these books very much. Non-members will enjoy the book because of its
well-written content. You like the first book, you will want to read all the other
books in the series.

Summary: Mixed Feelings
Comment: You notice all of the other reviewers said they finished all nine novels in about a month. It's because they are such an easy read! A little too easy. It's a good primer for LDS history but let's face it--no non-Mormon is going to read these and we all know how the story goes. The best parts of the books are the footnotes he puts at the end of the chapters (unfortunately not in the first couple of volumes, though), so you can go read more about it in context. And I agree with the ONE brave soul who said the women had nothing else on their minds other than babies and boys. The pioneer women were so much stronger, and I don't think Lund does them justice. It took me a couple of days to get through each of the first four volumes, because they are by far the most engaging. After that, Lund seems to be trying to keep pumping them out so he can meet a dealine. Very well researched all around, but a little too trite and simple for my taste. Bone up on your church history instead. I recommend books by Gene Sessions.

Summary: AWSEOME!!!
Comment: I'm actually fourteen (disregard the "under thirteen" thing) but I read this series when I was twelve. Now, let me tell you this, I am a bit of a reader, but when I picked up this book two years ago, I devoured all nine in only one and a half months. (Including "The Fire of the Covenant" also very good!) I would recommend this to ANYONE! The best books (okay, LotR is my favorite, but these are a very close second!)
