Summary: Trust No One
Comment: As in Sarah Waters first two novels, "Fingersmith" once again gives us a close view of the seamier side of life in London during Victorian times ? this time we make the acquaintance of a den of thieves & pickpockets among the dregs of society and get a glimpse of the world of pornography & kinky inclinations for gentlemen. This author is an expert at plot twists and surprises which really shock the reader, allow yourself uninterrupted time for this book, it is a real page turner, melodramatic, a love story, a murder/crime thriller and great historical fiction.
There are so many twist and turns to this story that I find it hard to say much about it without revealing crucial parts of the plot. The main characters are 2 orphans, Maud and Sue, that have grown up leading vastly different lives and are brought together in their late teens. At the beginning we are introduced to Sue and the family of thieves she lives among at the house of Mrs. Sucksby. Sue is presented with a mission by Mrs. Sucksby?s friend whom she calls ?Gentleman? ? The plan, in brief, is that Gentleman will marry an orphaned, isolated heiress then have her locked up in an asylum, stealing her money, Sue will pose as the lady?s maid and assist Gentleman in making his wife appear insane. And that is all I will say.
I look forward to rereading this one day to look out for all the little clues I missed the first time.

Summary: So much promise
Comment: I know i am not going to win many friends by giving this book only three stars, but each to their own.....
this book started *so* well - a Dickensian style story based in Victorian England, it tells the tale of Sue, who leaves the den of theives she has grown up in to live in a Manor House as maid to an odd girl whom is to be tricked out of her fortune.Unfortunately, Sue comes to feel for her mistress, but is trapped in a plot to undo her. To tell more would be to give the plot away. But so far, so good. This is about the first third of the book.
Then we read the story from the point of view of the other girl, Maud. We learn of her bizarre past, which i don't think i am giving too much away by saying it includes mad houses, an eccentric Uncle and erotic literature.
In the final third the plot gets very convoluted - it includes babies swapped at birth among other melodramatic turns. I continued to read to see if the book would live up to its promising start, but it never does, which is a pity. And the ending is very pat and boring. In general, it is over long and too melodramatic.
There are some plusses - it manages to avoid some pit-falls of over dramatic writing, and the sex is written in a non-cringeworthy manner.

Summary: Tedious and Dragging
Comment: Just because a book is by Sarah Waters (and she usually writes with more literary sense than many other lesbian authors) does not make it good literature, or even a good story.
I was so happy to find this book - imagine a lesbian plot line with more than a short afternoon's read! By the end, I was so disappointed.
Yes, there are many twists to the plot, but I'm sorry that I wasted my time plodding through to the end. If you want a good "miserable-read" with a bit more action, try the Lemony Snickett's series in the Young Adult section
