Title: Level 4: Virus Hunters of the Cdc by Joseph McCormick, Susan Fisher-Hoch, Leslie Alan Horvitz ISBN: 1-57036-277-7 Publisher: Turner Pub Pub. Date: 01 June, 1996 Format: Hardcover Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $22.95 |
Average Customer Rating: 3.94 (16 reviews)
Rating: 4
Summary: Engaging, personal, and scientific
Comment: McCormick and Ficsher-Hoch are deserving of noting their personal quest against the ravages of the viruses they encountered. It is great a priveleged to glimpse into their lives that were surrounded by tragedy and death. While McCormick may seem a bit ego-centric in this book, it is allowable due to surrounding elements of his life at the time...dead and dying humans, poverty, and hopelessness. It is forgivable that the authors feel proud.

Summary: The African crisis explained
Comment: This book provides a very good background explanation of the health crisis in Africa. It's a scientific book in some places, but a lot of that science is mingled with emotion and the doctors' personal experiences. I read this book in just one week because I enjoyed it so much; not something you expect when you purchase a book about disease. Suspense is also a major part, but has more of an impact than other books, because these are true life-or-death situations. Oh yeah, the book is entirely true. Highly recommended.

Summary: Gripping true stories of life-threatening events
Comment: This is an outstanding book. First-hand true-life recollections of a diverse range of natural disasters across Africa over 3 decades.
The authors tell their stories well, putting you right there in the bush. They retain their sense of humanity throughout so you really feel for their patients and their families as human beings.
1 quibble : only towards of the end of the story do they get married; at the very end of the book they both thank their first spouses for their respective sacrifices - but you never even get to know their spouses first names - what sort of acknowledgement remains anonymous?
2 mysteries : whilst there are plenty of good maps, there are no photos; no pictures of colleagues or patients, and no pictures of the offending Viruses and Bacteria - why not?
Great value for money - I've had to pay much more for far lesser books.
