Summary: not bad overall but a little dated now
Comment: This isn't bad overall but is a little dated now because Vitale devotes some of the book to predicting who's going to be a good pro, who's likely be a force in the 1996 NCAA tournament, and what coaches are hot prospects. These parts would have been better suited to a preseason guide; a little interesting in retrospect though to see if Dickie V was on the mark. He made some hits predicting Tubby Smith's success as a coach; Smith had just been hired at Georgia at the time of Holding Court but is now of course at Kentucky. Same thing goes for players - many of the names he targets as "Diaper Dandies" or "PTPers" are now NBA stars (or not if Vitale was off the mark).

But what he says about the recurring issues of college basketball - like the pressures on coaching, problems with money and eligibility, and the excitement of March Madness - are not dated and still relevant. Also interesting are his reflections on coaching, how he got started, etc. Some of the greatest moments and coaches in college basketball that he highlights haven't changed either. The book would have been better if it had been a little more organized. It reads just like Vitale is talking on TV, jumping around a lot and using those familiar Vitale phrases. He says a bit about traditional powers and coaching legends but spreads them throughout the book - comments on the coach's ability might appear in one chapter, ones about his best player will appear in another, and a story about his team's most notable tournament performances will appear in another. So some more careful editing would have helped.

Vitale's enthusiasm, warmth as a human being, and genuine passion for the game of college basketball shine through in Holding Court. If you're a fan of the game, you'll probably enjoy reading what Dickie V has to say about it.
