Summary: In Our Own Words
Comment: The twentieth century has been called the American Century. Not only has American economic and military might molded of the history century, but at its conclusion, American ideas of democracy and freedom dominate the political discourse of the globe. In Our Own Words by Senator Robert Torricelli is a remarkable anthology of 150 speeches, which captures the pulse of this tumultuous time. Some of these speeches created history, others reflect the temper of the time, but all are engrossing; giving body to the American idea, in triumph and tragedy, humor and sorrow. this book belongs in the library of any serious student of history.

Summary: A great compilation of speeches!
Comment: This book is an engrossing collection of speeches covering the poignant moments in American history. It is truly amazing to not only reread the famous political speeches of our time but to also hear the words of the less famous - from the eyewitness account of the sinking of the Titanic to the eulogy given for Knute Rockne to the heartbreaking works of Ryan White and his feelings about dealing with AIDS. Anyone who criticizes this work by saying it is an "advancement of liberal political philosophies" or that Senator Torricelli's choices are "totally subjective" has clearly not read enough of the book to know what they are talking about! I have given this book as a gift to several people who love history and they have all enjoyed reading it.

Summary: Great Reference of Speeches
Comment: Look - this compilation of speeches is well worth checking out. You can find the history of the 20th century wrapped up in the writings. From Roosevelt to Clinton there is much to be digested in this work. Any student of politics or history will be well served to read through this book and refer to it going forward. It is interesting to see how the language of speeches changes in the present, and how it recalls much of the past.

Classic speeches from JFK, Reagan, MLK, Clinton, etc will keep you interested, and some other speeches will put you to sleep. The point is - you will know more about our world, and the USA if you check out this book.
