Summary: The Medieval Soldier
Comment: A quick word on A V B Norman's credentials. His works appear in the bibliogrphies of historians no less renowned than R. Ewart Oakeshott, David Edge, and John Miles Paddock. Needless to say, his work is well respected.
This wonderful book focus on the early medieval period, and covers armour, weapons, tactics, and organization of the Vikings, The Franks, The Crusaders, etc. Line drawings, and plates reproducing manuscripts of the period aid the reader in understanding Mr. Norman's descriptions of weapons, armour, and other equipment. Furthermore, this book lives up to its title and deals with the common soldier, not just the over-lauded knight.
Thought this book only deals with my favourite period (the mid 14th century)in its brief final chapter, I would recomend this work to anyone with an interest in medieval warfare.
