Rating: 5
Summary: simply the best book on lingo out there
Comment: - With clean, accurate, and highly skillfull explanations, the book clearly stands out from the majority of lingo books. Packed with usefull examples, fast reference tables and hidden features, this book, accompanied by its sister publication "Director in a nutshell", is the ultimate book-ware available. Not to mention his cute style, as in "...dont be intimidated by a bug. They can smell fear."

Rating: 5
Summary: the book of books
Comment: As a C++ programmer, I thought "Director? Lingo? UUUHHHH! just another primitive script language." After working with Director for 2 years Bruce's book showed me that Lingo is not just another primitive dumb script language. This book ( i own about ten books about Director and Lingo + the oringinal documentation) showed me hidden features of the language, I never thought that they even existed.Full score, Bruce. By the way: this should not be the first book you ever read about director.

Rating: 1
Summary: WAY out of date
Comment: This book was written for Director 6.5, and currently Director is past 8.5 (MX is basically Director 9). So forget about anything about behaviors, library palette, anything 3D.. in short, this book was out of date 5 years ago.

Beyond this, the nutshell library is designed as a reference for programmers who want to quick-reference a new language. If you're already up to speed on C++, Java, SQL, etc, then the nutshell format will make sense as you seehow Director includes functions and classes in the form of handlers and properties. However, for the novice programmer looking to learn more about scripting Lingo, this book is awful.

I'd recommend the Director Demystified series instead, whatever's the latest edition. Macromedia's version updates aren't drastic, so at this point a book covering 8.5 is just fine.
