Summary: All characters are one dimensional, unrealistic dialog..BUT
Comment: I enjoyed John Welter's writing style, in the sense of easy prose, and his odd views on situations/life are refreshing--sometimes touching--but this book is a flat series of exchanges among one dimensional characters who all speak in the same voice.

Seriously, read this book, and try to contrast the cores of each major character. Everyone talks the same, and everyone feels the same. It seemed like the whole thing could have been written as monologue. Symbols are force-fed to the reader, and there are few moments of reader discovery as a result of Welter's propensity to point them out.

That said, I couldn't put the damn thing down, and read it in an afternoon. Welter's skewed views are refreshing, and this book is entertaining. I guess I was wishing for more of a Kurt Vonnegut type of thing where things aren't so didactic and plain. I wished it left more opportunities for reader discovery, rather than telling me "this means this" and "that means that."

Remember, it's easy to be a critic. These are only my opinions.

Summary: Laugh Out Loud!
Comment: I don't think I've ever read a book that made me laugh out loud as much as this one. It's an extremely funny and entertaining book! If you're looking for a good laugh, look no further.

Rating: 4
Summary: Laugh All Night
Comment: John Welter is one funny guy. He also has alot of heart, plus a brain. I never laughed so hard in a book one minute, then stopped, took a deep breath and gulped down tears the next. Doyle Coldiron, the protagonist, is a secret serviceman with a sense of humor about catching bullets for insignificant dignitaries. He falls in love with a coworker, plays midnight secret softball, and babysits a drunken diplomat, all the while exchanging the wittiest dialogue with everyone he encounters. Too bad Welter can't turn them out faster-I can't get enough of him.
