Summary: Required Reading for all
Comment: This book easily fits into the category of timeless American Classics. Despite being written in 1957, Rand is masterful in not dating her work. I strongly recommend this to all Americans, as it clearly defines the road that awaits us if we allow socialist policies (championed by modern liberals) to hold sway. The book accelerates the process, and shows the absurdity of the logical extension of liberalism. I think anyone who considers themselves a liberal (or is a registered Democrat) should read this book to truly understand the deeper roots of their beliefs. I would strongly suggest this should be required reading for all students before graduating high school, however its length makes that untenable. This book was recommended to me by an extremely liberal professor (also a lawyer) who claimed she could not reconcile her beliefs with the persuasive arguments put forth by Rand. It truly shows that capitalism and the profit motive have been and continue to be the greatest forces for positive social change in the world.

Summary: Book is worth the struggle (1100 pages... ack!)
Comment: It was recommended by a friend of mine, who said, "a lot of people in politics live by this woman's philosophy, which is called Objectivism, and some would rank it next to the Bible in terms of books that affect people's philosophies." So I read it, and it is definitely one of the most powerful novels I read. The odd thing is, it is a fictional novel that contains the explanation of a belief system.
However, the book is by far the longest I have ever read. It is 1100 pages of the smallest text you have ever seen. Ayn Rand is obviously a very intelligent person, but she is not the best writer ever. It's not bad writing, but it's not good enought to warrant 1100 pages. I am used to reading 50-60 pages an hour in most books, but in this I might only reach 20-30 an hour. You will find yourself plodding through slow sections and wishing for an abridged version of this book (I still wish there was an abridged version!).
I read the paperback version... with that many pages, it is made with very thin, almost tissue, paper, like you see in cheap bibles. Also the text is minuscule. If I had to do it again I would save myself some trouble and get the hardback.
All in all, this is a very powerful book. It has a remarkable plot that takes way too many pages to unfold. However, I am glad I read it because of the way it made me consider this philosophy. If you're like me, you want to read a provocative book, one that people either love or hate, one that could change the way you look at the world. If that sounds like you, take a look at the reviews on this page and consider reading Atlas Shrugged.

Summary: Clever propaganda, terribly dated and shallow
Comment: What a waste of time this book was. 1100 pages to convey a message that is "do what's best for yourself, and to hell with everyone else." Rand's foolish excuse for philosophy is exceeded only by the clumsiness of her prose, which features such winning phrases as "When asked what he would want to do he answered at once, 'Whatever is right.'"
This book is a product of 50s McCarthyism and anti-Communist fervor, and uses a remarkably dull method of repeatedly constructing straw men to have them torn down by Rand's superman.
This is indulgent candy for the mind, and utterly lacking in both literary and intellectual merit.
