Summary: Great original short stories
Comment: Clean, no nonsense writing. Terrific plot twists. Memorable characters. Cool. From a dear, proper little old lady just trying to sneak a little something to drink to a retired entrepenour who finds that he is not too old to learn some new "tricks," Frost delights us with a host of memorable characters. A master of a surreal realism, Frost takes the reader on jaunts that are just crazy enough to be true. A class of grade school children getting an unforgettable education in the facts of life at a rabbit farm provides the setting for a side-splitting comedy of errors. A man's musings on his wife's very recent death end in a twist that is both poignant and devilishly clever. More awaits the reader.
Frost is the rare storyteller who can paint a vivid picture, make his reader chuckle knowingly or laugh out loud, cringe at a sudden moment of terrible reality, and then keep one thinking again and again about the characters and their plights. This book is an outstanding work in the very best tradition of the American short story.

Summary: Stupendous Subversives
Comment: In this collection of 13 short stories, Frank Frost displays his engaging writing style and dark sense of humor. The stories, which range in length from 5 to 25 pages, deal with different cultural issues in American life (e.g. death, sex, encounters with Europeans, gender roles). They grab the reader from the beginning and often have an O.Henry-ish twist.
Frost is a well-known historian of the ancient world who has published many scholarly books and numerous articles, especially with regard to Classical Greek history and archaeology. In the last few years, he has added fiction writing to his Curriculum Vitae with his 1999 novel Dead Philadelphians. In Subversives, he flexes his abilities with the genre of the short story.
I enjoyed all 13 immensely. My favorite of all, though, had to be "The Frampton County Drunk Driving Project" where a Frostean protagonist accepts what turns out to be a peculiar blend of summary punishment from an attractive female sheriff for his slightly elevated blood alcohol level--a plot that would be a natural as the plot for a drive-in movie.
