Summary: Most of the information is very dated
Comment: Well, this book was published in 1987. It encourages the use of undergravel filters, which is about the worst type of filter you can use for large cichlids. It also says that these fish prefer meaty items, when it is now known that most of them need mostly vegetable matter in their diets. To his credit, however, Sands does recommend large weekly water changes with vacuuming of the gravel each time, but he says only to vacuum a small section of the gravel, which again is very dated information. He also recommends packing cannister filters with gravel, which is not a very practical suggestion, and says sponges do not provide good biological filtration, which is not correct. The section describing the fishes is very limited, and again, gives a lot of dated information about their needs and habits. He does not even correctly indentify their brooding habits. The photos are small and not very good, but again printing methods in 1987 were much less advanced than they are now. A MUCH better book is Aqualog Southamerican Cichlids III. This covers an enormous number of Central American cichlids and has gorgeous photos.
