Summary: A fitting overview of the work of a master in his field
Comment: Richard Steinheimer once told me, "We're not jusgt making photos; we're creating a body of work." With its beautifully reproduced and elegeantly laid out black and white images, this book opens a window into that body of work--and what a body of work it is. While the images themselves are technically flawless, they each also contain an obvious feeling for the subject matter, whether it be railroad rolling stock or the people who make the railroads move. While the book should appeal to virtually anyone with an interest in railroads, it will appeal particularly to those who have tried to focus their own cameras on railroad subjects. Benson's text underscores what is evident in many of the photos--the fact that Steinheimer was willing to drive or hike further, brave more sub-freezing cold, or to just wait patiently longer than others would have to capture just the right image. Steinheimer justifiably became known as the dean of western railroad photographers because he also cared more about his subject matter than most others. If you only purchase one railroad book this year, this is the one to get.
