Summary: Empirical rejection of school choice
Comment: Meier and Smith do a fine job in this book of rejecting the theory of school choice, by testing it against the actual outcome of choice and voucher proposals. They offer a variety of studies, local, national and international, that look at the effect of vouchers, and in doing so offer a solid case against them. It is about time someone put some research into this debate, which generally has relied upon theory rather than fact.

Summary: Sheer Propaganda
Comment: Lately I've been reading as many books about school choice as I could get my hands on, and this is one of the worst and most dishonest. Smith and Meier marshall and impressive, and misleading, array of facts to make a case which is frankly ridiculous. Many of the "facts and figures" they cite are blatently wrong, inconclusive, or contracted by other research.
The US government should start its own chain of supermarkets and pass a law that opponents of school choice may only shop in them. A few months of shortages and poor quality produce should be enough to bring about a change of heart in their faith in the ability of government to deliver
