Summary: A brief biography of Teddy Roosevelt for younger kids
Comment: "Theodore Roosevelt: A Photo-Illustrated Biography" is a brief introduction for younger students to the life of the 26th President of the United States. Steve Potts focuses on the basics, explaining how T.R. became president when he was only 42 years old, had the teddy bear named after him, and has the likeness of his face carved at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. The format is that each "chapter" is a single page, consisting of several brief paragraphs opposite a full page black & white photograph, usually of Roosevelt, at various times during his exciting life (including one of the Rough Riders on top of San Juan Hill). The emphasis here, as you might expect, is on basic biographical details. Roosevelt's progressivism is boiled down to his attacks on trusts, establishment of national parks and forests, and his making the U.S. a world power by creating one of the world's largest navies. So there is some sense of why T.R. was such a popular president. The result is a competent introductory biography about Theodore Roosevelt. Other titles in this series look at Benjamin Franklin, Andrew Jackson, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, T.R.'s cousin.
