Summary: simplistic, common-sense advice for beginning hikers
Comment: i'm very glad i read this book before buying it. my husband and i are backpackers expecting our first child in June 2002, so i've been searching for a good reference on taking small children into the wilderness.

this book covers very basic information about hiking (NOT overnight backpacking), with some reassurance thrown in about how children love the outdoors and tips on how to accomodate the demands of little ones and older kids in the wild. it reads like advice for beginning hikers who want to include their children; the only thing it has to offer to experienced hikers is some common-sense information about keeping children safe (it also mocks anyone who wants to take their infant on overnight backpacking trips).

it's a very small, easily carried book and should be OK for parents who are just getting into hiking. experienced parents, keep looking; this book probably isn't your answer.
