Summary: A look at the most explosive decade of the 20th century
Comment: "The 1960s" is still considered the most explosive decade of the 20th century, so it was going to be interesting to see what trio of pictures were put on the cover of this volume in the Cultural History of the United States Through the Decades series. The selections are a protest against the Vietnam War, John F. Kennedy at Dallas in the car in which he would be killed, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Lincoln Memorial where he gave his "I Have a Dream" speech.
Gini Holland beings this book with an introduction "Invitation to a Revolution: A Decade of Choice and Change," which looks at how the Silent Generation of the Fifties set the stage for the Sixties. Holland then offers seven theme-based chapters: (1) Cold War and the End of Camelot looks at Cuba, the Berlin Wall and JFK's assassination; (2) Guns and Butter: Politics in the 1960s covers the LBJ's War on Poverty; (3) The Vietnam War and Johnson's' Great Society looks at how foreign policy derailed LBJ's domestic agenda; (4) Civil Rights: The Quest for Equality covers the Civil Rights Movement from the Freedom Riders to the Black Panthers; (5) Countercultures Provide Alternatives looks at not just drugs in the Sixties but the Women's Liberation movement and minority rights; (6) Arts and Entertainment Reflect the Counterculture tries to deal with Bob Dylan, the Beatles, "The Graduate," "Laugh-In" and everything else that was happening in the Pop Culture revolution in a single chapter; and (7) The Space Race and Technology Take Us to the Moon ends our look at this decade on a up note.
Holland's look at "The 1960s" is illustrated with numerous photographs of the people and events that defined the times. The point of these books is to give teachers and students considerably more detail about this decade than they will get from their American History textbooks and one of the best ways it does that is through informative sidebars on topics such as Voter Registration, LSD, the Payola scandal, and Presidents resisting pressure to wage nuclear war. Despite the title, these books look at more than just the "culture" of the Sixties, covering technology, significant political and social events, along with trends and music. The back of the book includes notes, bibliographies, a chronology of events, and a detailed index. This is a most informative series and will be quite useful to classes that are focused on the 20th century.
