Summary: Pretty good for what it is
Comment: 'Aristotle Would Have Liked Oprah' is a self-help book-slash-brief introduction to the wisdom of various thinkers through the ages. If you're a student looking for the Cliff's Notes version of a certain philosopher, this isn't going to help you much; but if you're just curious about the subject, this is a decent overview of what many of the major philosophers were 'on about.'
Diamond seems to have a clear understanding of the world-views of her subjects, which really impressed me. I've read some bizarre interpretations in 'Introduction To...' types of philosophy books-- luckily this one was authored by a woman who knows what she's writing about. The style of the book is humorous, and the biographies are peppered with jokes and pop culture references which serve to make these figures from the past more accessible (such as the titular one about Aristotle being the type of guy who would've liked Oprah).
Of course this book doesn't go into great detail, and most of the fun of studying philosophy is in the details, e.g. learning how the philosophers reached their conclusions. But there's enough here to start a person on a pursuit of ideas, and since that's all this book claims to be, it's done its job quite well.

Summary: Wonderful reading!
Comment: This book is terrific. It is not only fun to read, I found it incredibly useful as a tool for changing my life. This book really is exceptional because Diamond presents the insights of the famous philosophers to the readers so they can start using them at once in their daily life. I never would have believed I could use advice from Socrates to improve my life, but this stuff really works. It is better than any self-help book I've ever read, plus it's really so much fun to read. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Socrates would have loved Diamond!
Comment: This is a very unusual book - informative yet highly entertaining. I have taught philosophy for years and have searched for a way to make the teachings of these great thinkers relevant to my students; this book brings a new dimension to these great works and I intend to use it an introductory primer in my classes. For the lay person I highly recommend it as enjoyable introduction to some of the greatest thoughts that humankind has produced. I agree completely with the reviewer who categorized this book as "a gem." It is definitely a five star recommendation.
