Summary: My Thoughts on OVER HERE
Comment: OVER HERE, by Juliet Gardiner, is a good book because it is obviously well-researched, informative, well-organized, and it contains appealing photographs and political cartoons. Firstly, this book is well researched. Countless interviews with former soldiers, British civilians, and numerous government officials can be found in the text. Not only does the piece contain a sizable bibliography, but the reader senses that the sources listed were actively used. Secondly, this book is very informative. It tells of the Americans' encounters with the British climate, diet, people, pubs, and police. It even talks about the African American soldiers and the British government' s insistence that these soldiers not be sent. The book's innumerable quotes and interviews also prove to be valuable sources of information. Thirdly, this nonfiction is good because it shows levels of organization. The book has a preface, eighteen clear-cut chapters in chronological order, sources, acknowledgments for both author and illustrations, and an index. The book's appealing photographs and cartoons also add to the reader's enjoyment of the book. The photos help the reader understand the book's verbal content by providing complementary visual content, and there are pictures in almost every chapter of the book. The political cartoons and comical drawings also augment the learning experience by showing examples of the past popular opinions and functioning much like the photographs as visual models. The only possible downside of the book would be the complete lack of color photographs. Although it would be nice to see the colors of the objects found in the pictures, I believe that the black and white photos are quite adequate, and only the most fastidious readers could complain. OVER HERE, by Juliet Gardiner, is an edifying book. I have difficulty finding any flaws in it and highly suggest it to any person wishing to find out more about the "friendly invasion" during World War II.
