Summary: Summary of the book and my feelings about Yep's writing.
Comment: A young boy, Moon Shadow, only 8 years old, lives in China with his mother and grandmother. His father, Wind Rider, lives in the US. Moon Shadow has never met his father and knows him only through letters and his mother's stories. On a trip back to China, a man comes to Moon Shadow's home. He claims to be a family member and a friend of Wind Rider's. He also says that he is to take Moon Shadow back to the US with him. Although it is dangerous, Moon Shadow trusts the man, and his father, Moon Shadow begins the long journey from the Middle Kingdom (China) and the Land of the Golden Mountain (the USA). In this new land, Moon Shadow finally meets his father, and finds out just what life is like for the Chinese in this forgein land. There he also must overcome a new language, long, hard hours of work, discrimination, Wind Rider's cousin Black Dog's opuim addiction, moving, and the San Francisco earthquake. Told from Moon Shadow's perspective, this book describes what it was like for the Chinese in the US at the beginning of the 20th century. Although I did not enjoy Lawrence Yep's writing style for the most part, there were certain passages such as the earthquake, and how Moon Shadow and Wind Rider deal with Black Dog's opuim addiction, where I was quite captivated. I also felt that Mr. Yep really brought the charactors to life and ended in just the right place. The ending had closer, but was not so clear cut that the reader knew just what happened. Instead, the book leaves the reader with just a little bit of hope and wonder. Although I would not recommend this book for the writing technique, I did learn a great deal about what the Chinese went through to get over here, and then what happened to them once they arrived. I think that this a terrific book for anyone who is studying, or is interested in Chinese immigration to the USA.
