Comment: Natsume Soseki is considered by most Japanese, and Westerners, to be one of the most important modern novelists in the history of literature. Along with the likes of Naoya Shiga, Mori Ogai, etc. Soseki rose the bar for Japanese literature so it could rest comfortably next to the great works of the French, the English, and the Russians. Known primarily in Japan for his novels, such as _Kokoro_, _The Miner_, and _The Grass on the Wayside_, Soseki also wrote a number of shorter less known works such as _Spring Miscellany, _The 210th Day_, _Inside My Glass Doors, and the vol. that I will write this short review on: _Ten Night's Dreams_.

This is a very short volume of short stories, 10 stories only four to five pages a piece, that Soseki wrote in 1908. They are supposedly based on his dreams, but it seems that most likely, he took early notes, that they are pure fantasy. The stories have a very dreamy, magical quality to them, and as the experienced reader of Soseki knows, this is something that is quite absent from his more serious works. The stories main themes center around death and suicide, but they can also be quite mundane as can be seen in _The Eighth Night_ which the reader only sees what the Narratot sees from the perspective of sitty in a barber chair. This could be a good introduction to Soseki for a new reader, but I would say _Kokoro_ or _Botchan_ would be better
