Summary: A lot of fun!
Comment: John Kendrick Bangs (1862-1922) was, in his time, a well known American humorist and author. If he is remembered at all today it is for his whimsical "Bangsian" stories, in which literary and historical figures are thrown together in outlandish free-for-alls, of which the most famous is his 1896 story, A Houseboat on the Styx.

This 1899 sequel revolves around Bangs himself discovering and restoring an old typewriter, which is subsequently discovered and used by the long late James Boswell. Jim Boswell is now a journalist in Hades, reporting the odd goings on. For example, now Washington, Cromwell and Caesar are demanding a constitution from old Lucifer, even while Napoleon defies his punishment; Baron Munchausen is claiming to have been born five times, and is seeking to expose as frauds the erstwhile Adam, Noah, Jonah and William Shakespeare; Xanthippe (Socrates' wife) is trying to start a feminist revolution; a city in Hades is trying to collect a dog-license fee on Cerberus; Sherlock Holmes is still solving mysteries, though his clientele down there is rather eclectic; and golf is sweeping the underworld! Oh, I almost forgot, the outings to the mortal world that Messrs Bangs and Boswell have organized have been a colossal success.

Yep, as the above description should suggest this is a book to be taken lightly! With a host of interesting characters frolicking across its pages, this book is a lot of fun. If you are looking for a good, light read, one with gentle humor and a pleasant storyline, then I highly recommend this book to you.
