Summary: Funny, Personal, Informative..A Unique View of The Rose City
Comment: I was born in Portland and spent my first 27 years there, but I guess I lived something of a sheltered life. Sure, I'd been to Powells Book's (many times), to Darcelle's (once) and had seen the 24-hour Church of Elvis, but in this book, Chuck Palahniuk introduced me to a lot of Portland I never knew. Oh, what I was missing!

In a coversation with writer Katherine Dunn at the beginning of the book, she shares with Palahniuk a theory I've heard others advance--that the city (and this region) attracts more than its share of offbeat folks because of its geographic position at the western end of the continent. People who are dissatisfied or don't feel like they fit in where they are have a tendency to keep moving. By the time they reach Oregon, they've run out of places to go. It makes sense to me, and seems as good an explanation as any for the whacky, wonderful subculture Chuck celebrates in this book. It's a unique blend of travel guide and personal memoir, and while it won't replace the traditional city handbooks, it's a great supplement for anybody wanting to explore the city's heart, soul, and sometimes seamy underside in a little more depth.

Summary: A walk with the Devil
Comment: Being a huge Palahniuk fan, this book was a definate pick-up. I wasn't sure how I would like him as a nonfiction writer but I guess it's safe to say that good writing is simply good writing. Portland seems to be a very interesting city and it's easy to see where Chuck is in fact a little bit of Portland himself. I was really more interested in his Postcards though, maybe to get a glimpse of Chuck personally. If your interested in visiting Portland I'd definately recommend this book. And if your a Palahniuk fan you have better already have this.

Summary: A Special Case
Comment: While certainly not for everyone, this little book belongs on many a shelf as well as in many a backpack - here's why (or why not, as the case may be):

* A fan of Mr. Palahniuk's work? A Must Have. Biographical sketches, funny and sad, poignant and pathetic, give flashbulb glimpses of the man and insight into his writing. As pure entertainment, 4.5 out of 5 stars.

* Looking to do something different in Portland, OR? Assuming all of the attractions noted haven't been overrun and wiped-out by rabid Fight Club wannabes, Fugitives and Refugees will lead you to some seriously off-the-map attractions. 5 of 5 stars but, like any travel guide, F & R will become less and less useful over time until it becomes a snapshot of a historical moment, "Chuck's Portland As It Was".

* Travel guide fan? Armchair explorer? Love reading about all those places you just know you'll never actually take the time to visit? This is among the oddest guides you'll find. 4 of 5 stars. Point off for its brevity.

* Jaded Portland Local? Too hip for your asymmetrical haircut? Got a "been-there-done-it-all-bought-the-ironic-tee-shirt" attitude? Do you now dislike Mr. Palahniuk and his books because of his popularity? 5 of 5 stars for you since this little book will give you more self-righteous "I Told You He Sold Out" proof to drop on your friends over six dollar lattes or twenty-five cent beers than any of his upcoming books and film releases ever possibly will.

Over-all grade: 4.625 out of 5 stars (rounded up for Amazon's whole-number system.)
