Summary: Great preview to TDF
Comment: I will be going to France this summer to watch the tour so when I found a book about the tour I just had to read it. "The Race" is a fictional story about Ben Barnes, a bike racer from the US, who gets the opportunity to ride as a domestique for a European team. As Ben in going through various stages in the tour his mind wanders and recalls parts of his cycling past from races to getting his first bike and his first crash. It's really great story telling. I couldn't put it down. After a long bike ride I managed to stay up until nearly midnight to finish the book.

Summary: Spellbinding
Comment: This is a read for anyone who has ever rode a bike and dreamed of higher aspirations. A wonderful story of a young man who against his father's wishes, refuses to give up his upmost desire to make bike racing his highest calling. Dave Shields will keep you glued to the story of Ben Barnes from the moment you open the book to the final gut busting end. My only sorrow was that the book was over way before I was ready to call it the end. Dave has a way of describing Ben's efforts as though you could feel his actual pain and gloat on his achievements. It is by far one of the best written accounts of actual bike racing in the Tour de France and what the riders face in that grueling challenge. But Dave gives you such wonderful flashbacks of how Ben begun his quest in his younger years that makes this such an overall fantastic read. I promise all readers-you will not be disappointed if you have any interest in bicycle racing.

Summary: you will not be able to put the book down
Comment: There are so many layers to the story. It's rich in detail and complex in nature. This is the second Dave Shields novel I have read, and now know for certain that he is a very talented gifted man. Please read this book.
