Summary: Long-termCare Insurance
Comment: I would like to enthusiastically recommend this pocket guide to long-term care insurance. In my lengthy search for guidance in the potential purchase of this highly complicated and costly insurance, I've atlast found a guide written with such clarity and detail that it gives the ordinarly consumer like myself a sharply focussed understanding of the subject. Everybody over 50 who cares about their own financial security, or those who are concerned for their aging parents' welfare should read this book.

Summary: Helpful with difficult information during difficult times
Comment: I found this book incredibly helpful as my partner and I are trying to figure out what to do for his elderly mother. When you're in the middle of the dilemma, the world can seem narrow or closed-in. This brief and to-the-point guide is helpful for navigating options. Being opened to possibilities expands are view of the future and allows us to be more compassionate towards his mother.

The book does two very important tasks. It brings together the ideas of caring, compassion, and care-taking with the tough facts about money and resources. Instead of pulling these facets of life apart completely, the pragmatic advise lets you see how you can actually help someone very close to you, and consequently help yourself.

The guide is also an invaluable tool for wading through the confusing information and terminology of long-term care insurance. There's a lot of jargon in the industry and this booklet spells it out in plain English. It's worth getting just as a lexicon for such terms as "waiver of premium" or "inflation rider." But it's even more valuable for it recommendations on how you can tailor the options for your own situation.

Summary: A Concise Guide to Help Confused Consumers
Comment: The subject of long term care is not one that most of us want to think about. The thought of someday needing chronic care at home or in a nursing facility is not a pleasant one. But, as that huge population bulge we call "Baby Boomers" is rapidly aging (someone turns 55 every 7 seconds for the next 20 years) and their own parents increasingly need care, planning for long term care is a subject that many of us simply can't afford to ignore.

For those who are ready to face reality, this new 48 page guide, "Long Term Care Insurance: How to Make Decisions That Are Right For You" is a great place to start.

Written by Dr. Penelope Tzougros, a college professor turned financial planner, this handbook will help readers to quickly get a handle on the issues that consumers often find confusing about this subject.

The book is divided into 2 parts. Part one focuses on helping the reader to understand how to determine if long term care insurance is right for you. the language is clear, concise and free of the arcane jargon often used by insurance companies.

To determine if LTC insurance is right for you, you first need to avoid some of the myths that often lead consumers to procrastinate. One myth is that federal insurance programs such as Medicare and Medicaid will pay for care in a nursing home or at home. The author helps her readers to better understand these programs, what they pay for and what they don't.

Dr. Tzougros also explores the option of using private savings or investments to pay for long term care vs paying premiums to an insurance company. Readers quickly learn that, if they are healthy enough to qualify for long term care insurance coverage, these policies will accumulate far more money than any savings or investment alternative.

Bob O'Toole is President of Informed Decisions, Inc and a co-author of "Health Care Without Medicare" and "Geriatric Care Management Handbook.
