Comment: I'm computer science masters student. I spent [$$] and bought this book only to return it on the same day.Instead of buying this book you can learn much of the stuff all by your self using the help in "crystal reports".
This book does not teach any thing about Cross-Tab reports, Linking to different types of databases/applications, OLAP reports. The examples in this book deal with some imaginary database, though the structure of tables are provided you won't get the sample database on a ploppy or CD.
I bought the book by reading the reviews from people who say that thay are in crystal reports tutors and bought this book for their students as study material. ****Plz dont fall for that****. Its all crap.
I would seriously suggest you to go to your nearest public library and get "Crystal Reports for Dummies by Allen G. Taylor" either version 8/8.5/9. Except few changes in interface and some features it is pretty much the same for beginner.
If you want to buy a book any ways the best one for a beginner according to me is Crystal Reports 9 for Dummies by Allen G. Taylor (Author). All the examples in this book use xtreme.mdb database(standard sample database with crystal reports). Even if by any chance you don't find this database you can search crystal reports website ...and download this database easily.

Summary: Great Intro to Crystal 9
Comment: I recently purchased 10 copies of the Hammerman manual for a Crystal 9 course I gave. I've been using Crystal since Version 1, so a few things surprised me about this manual. First, I was able to read through it without getting bored - it's very easy to read and there's actually a plot to follow that kept my interest. Second, I actually learned several things about Crystal even though I thought I knew just about everything there is to know (I've used it almost every day for years.) Most important, the 10 people I trained loved the course and the manual - I received several unsolicited compliments on how well written and easy to follow the manaul is, so it made me look good.
There are many good reference books on Crystal, but if you are new to Crystal and simply want to learn how to create some reports and don't want to spend a lot of time, the Hammerman book is a great way to get started. I'm looking forward to their Level 2 manual due out soon.
